Doorkeeper

This weekend my niece's wedding was held at the Desmond TuTu Center in Manhattan. It is a restored seminary on breathtaking grounds in a section of Manhattan called Chelsea. There is a cobbled walkway that leads around courtyard gardens, tall ivy walls framing aged stainglass and around the worn walkway, beautiful wooden doors--all of different shape and different uniqueness.

As I walked around the path, it felt good to feel the history and reverence there. To sit in the courtyard and enjoy the company and conversation of family and friends. To rejoice for the two lives coming together. To have tears of gratitude that my sister-in-law could be there having had her last radiation treatment the morning before the wedding.

All of the doors around the courtyard reminded me of a verse used in a homily I recently heard that spoke of how important it is do the right thing--no matter the consequence. To be able to be at peace with decisions--even difficult ones. To accept where you are--even when it is not where you want to end up to be. To be at peace with your place and in your journey.

"Better is one day in Your Courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a Doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked."
